Washington, D.C. is home to numerous internationally renowned museums. Yet in this city— the capital of the United States—not one of these museums pays tribute to the role women have played in American history. The National Women’s History Museum Act (H.R. 1700) seeks to redress this glaring omission.

The Act, introduced on March 25, 2009 by Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), will enable the National Women’s History Museum (currently an on-line cyber museum with traveling exhibits) to purchase land on the mall in Washington, D.C. to create a permanent home showcasing the vast contributions women have made to U.S. history.

In the words of Senator Collins (ME-R), “Such a museum would demonstrate the gratitude and respect we owe to the many generations of American women who have helped build, sustain and advance our society.” Senator Collins is expected to introduce the Senate companion to H.R. 1700 in the near future.

To generate support for the bill, the National Women’s History Museum has created the Right Here, Right Now! campaign so that people can make their voices heard on Capitol Hill and urge Congress to pass the National Women’s History Museum Act immediately.
